A Visit to the Hermitage

A Visit to the Hermitage

Each July Trinity’s UMW Circles take turns hosting a coffee at the Hermitage on Westwood Avenue.

On July 19 Circles 5 & 6 participated bringing 100 bags of cookies, cheese straws, and brownies for purchase ($.25 per bag) by the residents and staff, along with a pound cake and angel food cake, lemonade, and coffee to share with our guests. Friendly visiting is the main purpose.

Marble Jones and Nancy Miller are Trinity’s Hermitage Guild representatives and Mary Deal organizes the monthly coffees for the home. The ministry of presence with our seniors is important. We visited with Lee Childress who once headed Meals on Wheels. We also distributed three lap quilts for residents).

Thanks to all who backed goodies for this event. Louise Girvin of the Circle Leadership Team said: “It was a delightful event and so appreciated by all the residents who attended! It was a huge success!”

Tea Time

Tea Time

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 4, the auxiliary of UMFS hosted the annual High Tea for the residential students. The accompanying photos show the tremendous efforts of the UMFS Auxiliary in helping to make this event a success – from providing food, creating “fascinators” for the female residents, and providing ties for the young men. (Photographs of the residents aren’t allowed). Men from Trinity provided help putting on and tying neckties. Sheelagh Davis from Reveille UMC spoke about the tradition of High Tea, and Connor, the Chaplain Intern at UMFS, offered the prayer.

Appreciation was expressed by Elizabeth Buchholz , Program Director of UMFS: “Thank you all for an amazing event. The kids really had a wonderful time and it was the perfect amount of time. I saw some kids engage and get excited that typically do not. We are so very grateful to you all!!”

The Women’s Auxiliary meets at 10 am the third Thursday, members include representatives from Richmond United Methodist churches. UMFS (then known as the Children’s Orphanage at 3900 West Broad) is the institution that Dr. Joseph Mastin led immediately following his pastorate at the old Trinity building at 20th & Broad.

Bonnie and Chick Hadden, Dee Clements, Janet and Bob Sommerville, and Sharon and Rick Bauer were among the Trinity volunteers. Dee has recently served as the President of the UMFS Auxiliary.

Mary Hetzel summed up the impact of the event: “When we really take the time to make an event special with the hours and hours of preparation involved and many, many people, the work bears fruit for the Kingdom of God. This is the work of the UMW ladies across the metro Richmond area.”

Kits for Conference

Kits for Conference

UMCOR Kits for Annual Conference

Pastor Larry Lenow dedicated Trinity’s 2017 UMCOR Kits during worship on Sunday, June 11. Creating UMCOR Kits is one of many hands-on ministries of Trinity’s UMW, but anyone in our congregation with a heart to serve can help make them. This year we sent 223 UMCOR Kits to Annual Conference: 91 School Kits and 132 Health Kits. We also sent $382 to cover toothpaste and postage. UMCOR School Kits contain the required school supplies, without which children in developing countries are barred from attending school. The Trinity Stitchers generously supply beautiful handmade, double-handled fabric bags to hold the school supplies. Health Kits contain basic health supplies and go to disaster areas world-wide. To learn more about the required supplies, google UMCOR Kits. Debbie Schmitt is the contact person for UMCOR Kits.

The total number of Kits collected for UMCOR at Annual Conference was 41,522.
Specifically:

  • Bedding: 330
  • Layette: 940
  • Birthing: 2,327
  • School: 12,035
  • Cleaning: 332
  • Sewing: 539
  • Health: 24,801
  • Misc.: 218
School Kits for UMCOR

School Kits for UMCOR

One way UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) helps in relief around the world is by distributing school kits to children who have no access to school supplies. Trinity’s UMW spearheads our effort in providing school and health kits, but ANY individual or small group can participate in this project. Our Stitchers’ group has joined in, making the tote bags needed for the school kits. I remember Rev. Denise Honeycutt, who was recently the director of UMCOR, share how wonderful it was to actually see school kits distributed in Mozambique on one of her visits. Yes, they do make a difference.

At their meeting last week, Circle 7 put together school kits for UMCOR. For details how you can assemble UMCOR kits, contact Debbie Schmitt, barron.schmitt1@verizon.net.

Harvest Day

Harvest Day

Trinity’s 64th Harvest Day took place on Tuesday, November 15 with the theme “Celebrating the Stages of Faith”. Three women – Genevieve Embler, Catherine McSorley and Betsy Keen – shared beautifully about times in their lives when God was made real to them. Those receiving special mission recognition pins were Pat Satterfield, Beth Davis and Becky Roish. Dan Nichols was awarded a new award, “Man of the Year.”

This year’s Harvest Day was dedicated in honor of Margie Browder and Ella Ruth Blanton, and members of their families were in attendance. Checks from the Harvest Day offering will presented on Service Day to The Hermitage and to Trinity’s property maintenance fund. This year’s celebration was under the wonderful leadership of Pat Rollison, Andi Morgan and Sandy McGinnis.

“A Taste of Haiti” Banquet

“A Taste of Haiti” Banquet

More than 70 people attended the May 3rd “A Taste of Haiti” UMW Banquet. The Haiti Mission Team including Peggy Hart, Carmen Sheppard, Debbie Schmitt, Kelly Kindle, Renee Goode, Kae Kindle and Randi Buerlein, presented a slideshow detailing their March trip.

After a wonderful presentation from Alice Hirata about her group “Midwives for Haiti,” Peggy gave an overview of the island of Haiti, its population, commerce and numerous struggles. Carmen compiled a presentation from all our photos and Peggy and the team spoke about the stories surrounding each one. It was a great opportunity to convey our awe and admiration for not only Doctor Ray Ford and his foundation, “The Robert Ford Foundation” but also for the people of Haiti.

The Silent Auction for Haiti sponsored by the Haiti Mission Team raised $424.00 for the Elderly Village Project of the Robert Ford Haitian Orphanage & School Foundation.
