The Pastor’s Wednesday afternoon study will resume on September 13 at 1:30 PM with “Why”.
Where is God when tragedy and suffering strike?
When the ground shakes, and a poor nation’s economy is destroyed; when the waters rise, washing away a community’s hopes and dreams; when a child suffers neglect and abuse; when violence tears apart nations where is God? If God is all powerful, and if each one of us is a beloved child of God, then how can God allow tragedy and suffering to mar his creation?
In “Why?”, best-selling author, Adam Hamilton, brings fresh insight to the age-old question of how to understand the will of God. Rejecting simplistic answers and unexamined assumptions, he lays out core ideas for comprehending God’s plan for the world, including:
God will not take away our free will, even when we use it to grieve him.
God will never abandon us, especially in the midst of our suffering.
While God is not the author of suffering, God will bring blessing out of tragedy.”
The study will be an expansion on the book of the same title. A few copies are available at church, but if you would like for us to order one of your own, please let Pastor Brian know.
Our Wednesday night study group, 3M (named for Mary, Martha and Mark), will begin its thirteenth year in September. We meet Wednesdays, 6 – 7:30 PM and we study works from different theologians and authors. Last year we studied The Difficult Words of Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine, The Angels of Christmas by Susan Robb, Words of Life by Adam Hamilton and What’s So Amazing about Grace? by Philip Yancey.
This fall we will begin by studying Called by Susan Robb. A description from Cokesbury’s website follows: “Throughout the Bible, God interrupts the lives of ordinary men and women, calling and empowering them to lives of service they never could have imagined on their own. Called will examine the lives of the Abraham, Samuel, Esther and Mary Magdalene, Jonah, and the beloved disciple.”
We will begin on Wednesday, September 27, both in person and via Zoom.
Persons can contact Judy Oguich should you wish to join 3M for this study.
This fall the Dillard Bible Study Group will be discussing Israel: Mission Impossible, Part One by Dr. James P. McCullough, Jr. A study in three parts of the early history of Israel and the Prophets, the divided kingdom and Jeremiah. Starting September 12 we will meet on Monday at 7 PM via Zoom.
