Growing in Faith and in Fellowship!

Growing in Faith and in Fellowship!

Our Wednesday Night Bible Study group studied “The Story” this year – which is the bible in novel form. We learned a lot and shared a lot over the 31 weeks of our study as we looked at scripture in a new and refreshing way. Our faith was strengthened as we read “The Story” together, and then shared how we can apply it in our own lives. We also lifted each other in prayer throughout the week, as well as those concerns that were shared concerning our loved ones and friends. This picture is from our last meeting of the year, May 31, 2017.

Not pictured: Mark Devlin, Jamie Eubank, Wendy Floyd, Susan Freeman, Beth Parrish, Tracy Parrish and Carolyn Snead.

Stay tuned for what we will be studying next year!

Tea Time

Tea Time

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 4, the auxiliary of UMFS hosted the annual High Tea for the residential students. The accompanying photos show the tremendous efforts of the UMFS Auxiliary in helping to make this event a success – from providing food, creating “fascinators” for the female residents, and providing ties for the young men. (Photographs of the residents aren’t allowed). Men from Trinity provided help putting on and tying neckties. Sheelagh Davis from Reveille UMC spoke about the tradition of High Tea, and Connor, the Chaplain Intern at UMFS, offered the prayer.

Appreciation was expressed by Elizabeth Buchholz , Program Director of UMFS: “Thank you all for an amazing event. The kids really had a wonderful time and it was the perfect amount of time. I saw some kids engage and get excited that typically do not. We are so very grateful to you all!!”

The Women’s Auxiliary meets at 10 am the third Thursday, members include representatives from Richmond United Methodist churches. UMFS (then known as the Children’s Orphanage at 3900 West Broad) is the institution that Dr. Joseph Mastin led immediately following his pastorate at the old Trinity building at 20th & Broad.

Bonnie and Chick Hadden, Dee Clements, Janet and Bob Sommerville, and Sharon and Rick Bauer were among the Trinity volunteers. Dee has recently served as the President of the UMFS Auxiliary.

Mary Hetzel summed up the impact of the event: “When we really take the time to make an event special with the hours and hours of preparation involved and many, many people, the work bears fruit for the Kingdom of God. This is the work of the UMW ladies across the metro Richmond area.”

UMCOR Kits for Annual Conference

Pastor Larry Lenow dedicated Trinity’s 2017 UMCOR Kits during worship on Sunday, June 11. Creating UMCOR Kits is one of many hands-on ministries of Trinity’s UMW, but anyone in our congregation with a heart to serve can help make them. This year we sent 223 UMCOR Kits to Annual Conference: 91 School Kits and 132 Health Kits. We also sent $382 to cover toothpaste and postage. UMCOR School Kits contain the required school supplies, without which children in developing countries are barred from attending school. The Trinity Stitchers generously supply beautiful handmade, double-handled fabric bags to hold the school supplies. Health Kits contain basic health supplies and go to disaster areas world-wide. To learn more about the required supplies, google UMCOR Kits. Debbie Schmitt is the contact person for UMCOR Kits.

The total number of Kits collected for UMCOR at Annual Conference was 41,522.
Specifically:

  • Bedding: 330
  • Layette: 940
  • Birthing: 2,327
  • School: 12,035
  • Cleaning: 332
  • Sewing: 539
  • Health: 24,801
  • Misc.: 218

Volunteers from River Road UMC; River Road Church, Baptist; Second Baptist, South Richmond; Trinity UMC; and Tuckahoe Presbyterian provided the gift items to wish our students well as they make the big transition to middle school. Delivery of the bags took place Wednesday, June 14 while the students are out for lunch at Golden Corral.

Helped Others and Had Fun!

Helped Others and Had Fun!

The Children’s Mission Trip participants had an amazing time on their trip in June. We stayed at Virginia Wesleyan College and did mission work in the Norfolk/VA Beach area. We enjoyed the fellowship and bingo with the ladies at Lydia H. Porter Home, in Norfolk. We also planned, shopped for and prepared a meal for the Norfolk Ronald McDonald House. In VA Beach we worked at the Nimmo UMC Community garden and separated bulk supplies at Potter’s House. When we are not busy with our hands-on projects, we spent time together in Prayer & Bible study, preparing our own meals, watching a movie, and playing team building games. Thank you for your support and prayers.

Creative Hands Working to Provide Comfort to Many!

Creative Hands Working to Provide Comfort to Many!

Trinity Stitchers had 10 members present on our workday, Thursday, March 16. There was a lot of sewing, cutting, sorting, and of course conversation during the workday. Our talented group of women amazingly take pieces of fabric and create one-of-a-kind items that we share with others that need encouragement and joy in their lives.

Last month, we received two rolling carts for our sewing closet and organized our space more efficiently. The carts provide extra storage and easier access to items stored on the closet shelves. The arrangement definitely helped our workday go smoother and makes it much easier to get to items needed.

Donations continue to come our way and keep the group energized. In addition to the lap quilts and prayer shawls, we create tote bags for UMCOR, baby slings for Honduras mission trip each year, special tote bags for individuals, pillows, plus provide sewing skills to other groups in the church that need assistance.

We need others who enjoy knitting or crocheting to help create some prayer shawls. We have patterns available, and encourage you to consider helping in this ministry.

This active group meets the 3rd Thursday of each month in Room 323 from 9:00 A.M. until 2:30-3:00 P.M. (often we get involved in a project stay longer.) We encourage you to join us for whatever time you can. We bring our lunch and share a devotion and business related to the group’s activities at that time. Even if you don’t sew, we can use your hands to help with ironing, sorting, selecting fabrics or designing a quilt top. Once you attend one of our workdays, you will be looking forward to the next one to be engaged with women of great faith and creative energy. We hope to see you soon – we need YOU!
